Waikiki health clinic looking for new space

A medical and social services agency that serves more than 5,000 clients a year will be in need of a new home when its lease ends in mid-April.

The Waikiki Health Center, which offers a half-dozen programs to the homeless, elderly, youth and HIV/AIDS-infected populations of Waikiki, operates at two locations. Its administrative and clinical operations are at its 'Ohua Street facility, and other programs are housed at its Launiu Street location. The new space being sought will replace the latter property.

"Magoon Estate was very, very generous in terms of providing that property at a very, very low rent," said Lin Becker, the center's interim executive director.

While an 1,800-square-foot space would be ideal, officials said they are flexible in the types of properties they'll consider.

"We're just looking for some suitable space that we could afford," said Philip Kinnicutt, president of the board of directors of the health center.

If available office space is found, Becker said, the health center would move its administrative offices from the 'Ohua Street facility to the new space, allowing the center to move its programs at Launiu Street to the 'Ohua Street location.

"We would really welcome the opportunity to talk with anyone regarding potential space in the Waikiki area," Becker said.

The nonprofit organization has been offering low-cost programs to the community for more than 30 years. If property managers or owners would like to respond to the health center's need, they can call Becker at 791-9302.
