Foyle lifts BYUH over Chaminade, 93-88

All-American Alexus Foyle scored 35 points and Austin Smylie added 17 points and 11 rebounds as Brigham Young-Hawai'i completed a perfect home season last night with a 93-88 win over Chaminade.

The Seasiders (19-3 overall, 13-2 PacWest), ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division II, went 13-0 this season at the Cannon Activities Center in La'ie. The have won 19 in a row at home dating to last season.

Leon Ballard scored 35 points to lead Chaminade (12-15, 7-8).

SOFTBALL

BYUH, Hilo split: Regina Molifua hit a two-run homer in the top of the 10th inning as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-2, in the first game of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader in Hilo.

In the second game, the Vulcans broke open a 2-all tie in the fourth with three runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth to win, 9-2.

In the first game, Michelle Gibson led off the inning with a single. Molifua then drove an 0-2 pitch over the left-field fence.

SWIMMING

Senior records: Iolani School senior Hongzhe Sun broke a 21-year-old Hawai'i senior short-course record six days after his high-school career ended and three other state senior records were broken Friday night and yesterday in the senior state championship meet at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Sun, who holds three state high school records, set a senior short-course record of 3 minutes, 58.27 seconds for the 400-yard individual medley on Friday. He erased the record of 3:58.88 set by John Brinkman of the University of Hawai'i in 1982.

Yan Chen, a University of Hawai'i sophomore from Da Lien, China, yesterday broke Kai'ili Chun's 24-year-old women's 100 backstroke record of 57.79 with a time of 56.40.

Two relay records also fell at the two-day senior championship meet: 3:17.36 in the 400 medley relay by the University of Hawai'i men's team of Daniel Blackborrow, Cheyne Bloch, Kurt Boehm and Peter Thew; and 1:54.25 in the women's 200 medley relay by the Iolani Swim Club team of Nikki Yamamoto, April Woo, Mallorie Lim and Aja Kusao.

TENNIS

BYUH women win: The top-ranked Brigham Young-Hawai'i women's tennis team won its 39th consecutive match yesterday, defeating Illinois State, 7-2, in La'ie.

For BYUH, top-ranked Adrienn Hegedus, Judy Weng, Anna Anikanova, Amy Sun and Gurianna Korinihona won their singles matches.

In doubles, BYUH's Anikanova and Sun, and Korinihona and Schwenke came away with wins.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

Athletes to be honored: Courtney Kessell, Kailua High School softball pitcher, and Hongzhe Sun, an Iolani swimmer, will be honored as female and male sportspersons of the month for February by the Quarterback Club tomorrow at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Kessell led Kailua to the state softball championship.

Sun, led Iolani to its second straight boys state swimming championship, winning four events and setting a state record in the 200 individual medley.

BASEBALL

Hilo sweeps Matsusaka: Hawai'i-Hilo swept an exhibition doubleheader with Matsusaka of Japan, 9-5 and 3-0, yesterday at Francis Wong Stadium.
