Top seed BYUH to host Division II regional

Advertiser Staff

The Brigham Young-Hawai'i and Hawai'i-Hilo men's basketball teams will be playing in the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament's West Regional at La'ie starting Friday.

Brigham Young (19-3), which was awarded region's top seed, opens against Cal State Bakersfield (19-8) at 8:30 p.m. Hawai'i-Hilo (18-9), the sixth seed, opens against Humboldt State (Calif.), (22-5) at noon.

Other first-round games to be played at BYUH's Cannon Activities Center are Sonoma State (Calif.) (18-9) vs. Cal State San Bernardino (21-6) at 2:30 p.m. and Cal Poly Pomona (20-7) vs. Alaska Fairbanks (20-7) at 6 p.m.

The regional second round is on Saturday and the final on Monday.

Brigham Young, which is ranked No. 17 in the nation, received an automatic berth in the tournament as the champions of the Pacific West Conference. Last season, the Seasiders lost to Seattle Pacific in the first round, 82-57. This will be the Seasiders' third appearance in the NCAAs.

This will be UH-Hilo's first trip to the NCAA II tournament. It is the Vulcans' first post-season appearance since earning an at-large berth and losing in the first round of the NAIA National Championships in 1994.

The Seasiders and Vulcans are in opposite brackets of the West Regional and would only meet if both advance to the finals.
