• The three leading candidates for the position of dean of the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's School of Travel Industry Management will be introduced at public presentations this month. The series, "The Future of Travel Industry Management in the Asia-Pacific Region: Academic and Industry Synergies" — each program from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Sunset Reference Center in George Hall at UH-Manoa — will allow the candidates to present their individual visions for the school. The presentations are open to the general public.

• Wednesday: Stephen Smith, professor in the department of recreation and leisure studies at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

• Next Monday: Walter Jamieson, vice chairman of the World Tourism Education and Research Centre at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada; also professor of planning, and director of the historical resources intern program, in the university's faculty of environmental design.

• What advocates in the arbitration proceedings do or don't do, including their mistakes, and how that affects the arbitrator's resolution of a grievance will be part of a discussion Wednesday sponsored by the local chapter of the Industrial Relations Research Association. The discussion, "GETTING INSIDE THE HEAD OF THE ARBITRATOR," will feature lawyer, mediator and arbitrator Joseph F. Gentile. Gentile, who has arbitrated more than 5,000 cases, has held management positions in industrial relations with major organizations including the California Trucking Association and Kaiser Steel Corp. He is an adjunct professor of law at Pepperdine University School of Law and serves as chairman of the Los Angeles County Employee Relations Commission.
