When we put out the call last week for men who wanted to be Hawai'i's Bachelor, we weren't sure how much response it would generate.

Let's just say there are lots of would-be lovers out there.

In a week, we received close to 200 responses.

More than 100 men have applied to be Hawai'i's Bachelor. They from 21 to 59 years old and come from all walks of life. Actors. Architects. A firefighter. Lawyers. Police officers. Pilots. Teachers. Engineers. Electricians. Bartenders. Bellhops. Computer technicians. Students. Salesmen. Single dads.

"I'm a gamer, and I would rather try something interesting than always wonder 'what if?' " one hopeful bachelor wrote. "Plus it's free!"

Well, it will cost some courage. We will be writing about our Bachelor and his dates. We'll know if there's a goodnight kiss. And we'll know if it goes horribly wrong.

We're in the process of zeroing in on Hawai'i's Bachelor, but the final decision will be left up to you.

On Friday, we'll reveal 10 finalists. Readers can also look online at www.honoluluadvertiser.com for bios of eligible bachelors and watch their video soundbites.

Next, the voting will begin. Online voters will narrow the finalists to three, then to one. The last man standing will be Hawai'i's Bachelor.

The next step will be choosing women to date him. Single gals can apply now here online. We'll select 10 women for the dating pool based on the applications you fill out.

Then we'll send the contestants out on dates. The bachelor will begin with a group dinner with all 10 women.

From there, we'll send them on more outings with the potential for romance. In exchange, the bachelor and his dates will let a reporter and photographer follow them to tell stories about what happens.

The daters will keep online diaries logging some of the details. Starting today, we're also posting a Reporter's Notebook online, telling you what's going on behind the scenes.

Not everyone will stay in the game.

Hawai'i's Bachelor will have to eliminate contenders on each date, and online readers can give him suggestions as they send in comments and vote for their favorites. You want reality? This is it.
