Advertiser Staff and News Services

J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" series is ranked No. 1 in a new Top 10 of science fiction compiled by editors of the Science Fiction Book Club.

J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series didn't make the cut.

"More time has to pass before you can gauge if something is overwhelmingly significant," said Andrew Wheeler, an editor for the 50-year-old club. "In another 25 years, I think it's a fair chance she'll be on it."

The rankings, in order from No. 2: "The Foundation Trilogy," Isaac Asimov; "Dune," Frank Herbert; "Stranger in the Strange Land," Robert A Heinlein; "A Wizard of Earthsea," Ursula K. LeGuin; "Neuromancer," William Gibson; "Childhood's End," Arthur C. Clarke; "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?," Philip K. Dick; "The Mists of Avalon," Marion Zimmer Bradley; "Fahrenheit 452," Ray Bradbury.

Pearl Harbor inspires

Susan D. Wiseman was on O'ahu visiting firefighter Lee Muller, whom she met while working on a 9/11 tribute song, when she took a trip to the Arizona Memorial.

"I was so overcome with the loss, and, after the recent 'Pearl Harbor' movie bringing it all to our attention in my generation, I was inspired to write a song honoring the memory of those who gave so much," she said.

The housewife from Atlanta penned "Remembering Pearl," which you can listen to at susandwiseman.iuma.com.
