NORTH SHORE

Diver drowns off Kahuku

A man in his mid 50s drowned yesterday afternoon offshore of the Kahuku Golf Course.

The accident was reported at about 3:15 p.m. Authorities said the man had been diving with friends, who brought him to shore.

Sue Rauch, Emergency Medical Services district chief, said the man was thought to have been underwater for about a half-hour.

Paramedics attempted to revive him as they took him by ambulance to Kahuku Community Hospital, but were unsuccessful.

Police and firefighters also went to the scene, but few details were available last night.

Marker washes up at Turtle bay

A glowing object slightly smaller than a soft drink can and emitting a white vapor washed up on the beach in front of Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku yesterday, prompting officials to evacuate the beach.

The 706 Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit out of Fort Shafter identified the item as a "red phosphorus maritime marker," said Bob Warner, an Army spokesman, and blew it up on the beach yesterday afternoon.

Police, firefighters and a hazardous materials team also responded.

The device, which was extremely rusted, was found at the waters edge near the resort at shortly after 11 a.m.

The Army team blew the devise up on the beach at about 3 p.m. No one was injured.

Elizabeth Fitzgerald, a Turtle Bay spokeswoman, said the hotel was not evacuated, and guests did not seem particularly disturbed. "People here are just enjoying their Mai Tais," she said.
