Kailua volunteer at AmeriCorps

Jessica Cole of Kailua has begun her service with AmeriCorps' National Civilian Community Corps in a 10-month program.

Volunteers serve on projects such as tutoring schoolchildren, clearing trails, building family homes, and occasionally fighting wilderness fires and assisting the Red Cross with disaster relief. The group was part of recovery efforts stemming from the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington.


Public works group sworn in

Rouen Liu has been installed as president of the local chapter of the American Public Works Association, an educational and professional organization of government agencies, businesses and private individuals dedicated to upholding the quality of public works.

Other officers: vice president, Brian Sekiguchi; secretary, Jim Kurata; treasurer, Lois Chong; past president, Larry Leopardi; delegate, Lester Fukuda; alternate delegate, Ken Morikami; and historian, Eugene Lee.

Fred Pascua is in charge of awards; Rod Haraga, education; Robert Primiano, membership; Richelle Suzuki, newsletter; and Pam Tsugawa, publicity.


Awards honor drug-free work

In observance of Drug-Free Hawai'i Awareness Month, the Hawai'i Medical Service Association has announced recipients of its 2003 Ola Pono Awards, which recognize efforts to promote a drug-free environment.

Ola Pono is the Hawaiian phrase for "to live right." Winners are able to pick the recipient of a $1,000 check accompanying the award.

  • In the individual category: Jessie marques, Pahala, Hawai'i (with the check going to the Ka'u Rural Health Association); Wally Lau, Kailua on the Big Island (check to Neighborhood Place of Kona); Clyde Yamamoto, Kane'ohe (check to Friends of Waimanalo).
  • Group category: Hui Malama O Ke Kai, Waimanalo (with the check going to Hui Malama O Ke Kai); Kane'ohe Comprehensive Student Support Team (check to Hawai'i International Child).
  • Hau Blossom Award, recognizing exceptional efforts to create and maintain a safe, healthy community: Kealakehe Neighborhood Watch in Kona on the Big Island (with the check going to the Kealakehe Community Youth Council).


Boys, Girls Club elects Churchill

The Boys and Girls Club of Hawai'i has announced new officers: Suzy Churchill, president; Richard Marine, of Century Computers, president-elect; John Komeiji, of Watanabe Ing Kawashima & Komeiji, vice president; Robin Yoshimura, of doty Equities, treasurer; Crystal Rose, of Bays Deaver Lung Rose & Baba, secretary.

New board members include Michael "Chip" Doyle, of Group Pacific; Blenn Fujimoto, of Central Pacific Bank; Sydney Fernandez-Fasi, of Fun Factory; Anne Marie Beck, of Bank of Hawaii; Michael Broderick, of the state judiciary; and Dr. Nance Pace of St. Andrew's Priory.


Burns heads national council

Pamela Burns, president and chief executive officer of the Hawaiian Humane Society, was elected president of the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, a group formed in 1993 to promote responsible stewardship of companion animals.
