Film industry forum

LEE
Legislators and filmmakers get together for a public forum 8:30-11:30 a.m. tomorrow at Dole Signature Theatres, to share ideas on the film industry.

The New Aloha Economy Days session comes as North Shore filming has started on John Stockwell's Fox TV pilot, "The Break." Supporters hope it will evolve into an ongoing weekly series.

Actor/producer Ray Bumatai, Hollywood producer Chris Lee (a co-director of the University of Hawai'i Cinematic and Digital Arts Program), independent film-maker Edgy Lee and screenwriter/lawyer Roy Tjioe host a panel on "Growing Hawai'i's Film Industry From the Inside Out." Clips from local filmmakers and a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the making of Revolution Studio's Hawai'i-filmed feature, "Tears of the Sun," starring Bruce Willis, also will be shown.

New York shopping

Zagat, the book publisher famed for its dinner-driven restaurant guides, has released a guide to shopping in New York City. The Zagat Survey "New York City Shopping Guide" ($14.95) names Bloomingdale's the most popular retail destination; in fashion and beauty, jewelers Harry Winston, Graff, Van Cleef & Arpels and Cartier, perfumer Creed and menswear store Turnbull & Asser were tops. But many complained of poor service, crowds and long lines. "The New York stores ... are really suffering from a lack of warm hospitality. Even smiling would be a major improvement in a lot of stores," said chief executive Tim Zagat.
