SHOW BIZ
Jordan Segundo added to Mother's Day show

By Wayne Harada

THE NAME GAME: Interest in Jordan Segundo, Hawai'i's "American Idol" entry, doesn't seem to be waning. He has been signed as a guest artist in Ho'okena's Mother's Day luncheon concert, May 11 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village's Coral Ballroom. Ho'okena has assembled a stellar lineup. Mahi Beamer will perform piano serenades during lunch; in the main show will be: the incomparable soprano Nina Keali'iwahamana and still-rising falsetto star Raiatea Helm. Sounds like a cross-the-generations crowd-pleaser. ...

Segundo dropped in at the Halekulani Hotel's Lewers Lounge, where guests heard him deliver tunes that would have reduced "Idol" judge Simon Cowell to fish on a slab. Segundo, it turns out, is a longtime friend of singer Sonya Mendez, who performs at Lewers with pianist Lenny Keys on Saturdays. If you're a Lewers regular, you might want to know that pianist-vocalist Freddie Alcantar temporarily is replacing David Swanson Thursdays and Fridays, through May, while Swanson entertains aboard the cruise ships. ...

WHEE, THE PEOPLE: Loretta Ables Sayre was a surprise guest artist when the Brothers Cazimero took centerstage at the Hawai'i Theatre's "Hana Hou" concert last Friday. She and Robert Cazimero gave their first public performance of "I'll Remember You/She's Gone Again," the duet medley of Kui Lee favorites, which Ables Sayre recorded with Cazimero on her "Dreamy" CD. Mahlon Moore of KHUI 99.5 told her that it's one of the three most requested tunes. "Blew me away," she said. ...

When Glenn "Hana Boy" Pinho opened late last month at the Banana Patch Lounge of the Miramar Hotel (he's on 7:30-9:30 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays), his applaudience included the likes of Melveen Leed, Rodney Cazimero, Kale Imua and Simply Shy. Imua, from 98.5 FM, produces entertainment for the lounge the rest of the week. ...

With a parade of soft jazz and romantic weekend shows at the Ship's Tavern, late-night crowds have been mounting. Checking out the action recently: Rick Blangiardi, Eddie Inouye and Carole Kai, Richard and Emily Field. George Street returns this Friday, Sonya Mendez and Rich Crandall March 21 and 28; Kit Samson's the Saturday attraction, usually with Willow Chang. ...

THE BUZZ IS TRUE: Manoa Valley Theatre's "Beehive" is blissful fun, its hair obviously the hot item, with an ensemble wigging it while pumping out songs of the Supremes, Tina Turner, Cher, Janis Joplin, Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield, Lesley Gore, Brenda Lee, the Chiffons and the Angels. Go for the visual splendor, go for the musical memories, but go quickly — it's a virtual sellout, already extended through April 6. ...

SHORTS OF SORTS: Brother Noland and Karen Keawehawai'i will appear in "Love and Aloha — From the Heart," a concert staged by the Elijah Bible Institute and hosted and directed by Stella Chow-Couch, set for 4 p.m. March 23 at the Hawai'i Theatre. Andy Pang, a Kaimuki High School senior, has placed first in a statewide Shakespeare competition sponsored by the English Speaking Union, and a trip's the thing — he gets to go to New York for the national finals in April. He performed a Petruchio monologue from "The Taming of the Shrew" and Sonnet 23 and just wound up public performances in Kaimuki's "Once on This Island" musical. ...

And that's Show Biz ...
