Gulf-bound USS Nimitz to arrive here today

Advertiser Staff

The San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Nimitz is expected to pull into Pearl Harbor this morning on a deployment that will bring it within striking distance of Iraq.

The carrier, with 5,500 crew members and 70 F/A-18 fighters and other aircraft, is stopping here for several days to replenish supplies, the Navy said.

The Pearl Harbor-based cruiser USS Chosin will be part of the eight-ship Nimitz battle group, which is expected to reach the Persian Gulf in about a month.
