Experts discuss climate change
Hawai'i experts from several disciplines will discuss the effects of climate change on the Islands and across the Pacific in a two-day conference, "Preparing for Climate Change," March 17 and 18 at Kapi'olani Community College.
Speakers on the first day include Tom Schroeder, director of the University of Hawai'i's Joint Institute for Maritime and Atmospheric Research; David Kennard, a mitigation specialist with the Federal Emergency Management Agency; Kevin Kodama, of the National Weather Service; and Gerard Nihous, a climate specialist at the Pacific International Center for Climate Research.
Day two includes video producer Paul (Doc) Berry's presentation: "Rising Waters and Climate Change: Waikiki"; Larry Kanda, state Civil Defense mitigation officer; and a panel discussion entitled "Building Resilient Communities."
Registration will be at 10 a.m. March 17 and 8 a.m. March 18 at the 'Ohi'a Auditorium at KCC's Diamond Head campus.

Likelike work to close lanes
The state Department of Transportation is closing portions of Likelike Highway through Friday this week for ongoing repair work.
One lane in the Honolulu-bound direction from about Valley View Drive to Kula Kolea Drive will be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for construction of retaining walls.
One lane in both directions will be closed from about Valley View Drive to the Burmeister Overpass from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for median reconstruction work.
Termites topic of seminar
University of Hawai'i termite experts will answer the public's questions about those persistent pests from 6:30 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at 'Aiea High School.
The continuing series of termite information seminars are sponsored by the Hawai'i Area-Wide Termite Suppression Project at UH and will help homeowners control termite damage in their homes. The project is being done as part of the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources.

Recycling center opens March 29
HILO, Hawai'i A federally financed recycling center will open March 29 in Kea'au, offering a single site where residents can deposit items for recycling when they dump household trash.
The center will accept aluminum and scrap metal, office paper, magazines, newspaper, plastic, cardboard, inkjet and toner cartridges, glass, green waste and other items.
It also will accept office equipment, consumer electronics, appliances, furniture and certain garden tools.
