"He's a great handler of the ball, and his sense on the field is very good," Kalaheo coach Leo Titcomb says of forward Brandon Self. "He did a heck of a job and caused a lot of trouble for teams."

Kaiser High School senior Brandon Self moved from midfielder to forward this season and elevated his soccer game, eventually moving from second-team all-star in 2002 to Player of the Year in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division.

Self scored eight goals and helped the Cougars (7-1-2) to the East's No. 1 seed in the OIA playoffs.

"Moving him up front was instrumental," Kalaheo coach Leo Titcomb said. "He's a great handler of the ball, and his sense on the field is very good. He did a heck of a job and caused a lot of trouble for teams."

Self was joined on the OIA East all-star first team by teammates Jeremy Patton (defender) and Joshua Curtis (goalkeeper). Kalaheo and Roosevelt also placed three players on the first team: forward Max Anton and defenders Matrix Dumlao and Chris Pascua from Kalaheo; and forwards Holden Lau and Evan Patek and midfielder Erik Le from Roosevelt. Patek finished second in the East with nine goals and Le was tied for fourth with seven goals.

Moanalua forward Aaron Miura and defender Colin Morikawa round out the first team. Miura led all OIA players with 13 goals in the regular season.

Castle's Mark Kane was named Coach of the Year after leading a young Knights squad to 7-1-2 record and a share of the East championship. Kane pulled double duty this winter, coaching both the boys and girls teams at Castle.
