West's 5-under 67 leads State Amateur golf

Mark West fired a 5-under par 67 yesterday to take a three-stroke lead after the opening round of the 2003 Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Tournament at Pearl Country Club.

Defending champion Joe Phengsavath and Chase Chulakote were tied for second at 70.

Wade Nakamura, Punahou eighth-grader Michelle Wie, 2002 Manoa Cup champion Travis Toyama, Paul Kimura and John Bascuk all shot 71.

Kira-Ann Murashige and Amanda Wilson, two Big Island high school students playing in the tournament for the first time, didn't fare as well.

Murashige, the defending Jennie K. Invitational champion opened with an 81, while Wilson shot 83.

The second round will be played today starting at 7 a.m. The cut will be made, with the top 40 and ties advancing to the weekend.


COLLEGE SOFTBALL

• No. 9 Fullerton beats UH: Ninth-ranked Cal State Fullerton rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the University of Hawai'i, 3-1, yesterday in the opening round of the Kia Klassic Tournament at Fullerton, Calif.

Jennifer Holt's RBI double and a run-scoring single by Jodie Cox off UH starter Melissa Coogan (11-3), put the Titans ahead 3-1.

Gina Oaks (11-3) completed her five-hitter by retiring the Rainbow Wahine in order in the ninth.

Hawai'i then lost to No. 5 Washington, 5-2.


GYMNASTICS

• Junior Olympic qualifying: Hawai'i's top male gymnasts will compete tomorrow at the USAG Hawai'i State Men's Gym Championship, hosted by Hawai'i Academy at Aloha Gymnastics.

Winners qualify for the 2003 USA Men's Junior Olympics Region I Gymnastics Championships, to be held in April at the Las Vegas Sports Arena.

Class 7 through 5 will start at 2:30 p.m. followed by Class 4 through 1 at 5 p.m.

SWIMMING

• Eckert wins: Iolani Swim Club's Mark Eckert Jr. won the 200-yard backstroke last night at USA Swimming's Western Zone championships at Federal Way, Wash.

Eckert's time in the short-course race was 1 minute, 48.61 seconds, which qualifies for the Spring Nationals, April 1-5, in Indianapolis.

Hongzhe Sun, Eckert's Iolani teammate, was disqualified in the same race.

Kamehameha Swim Club's 200 freestyle relay team of Ben Komer, Matt McVittie, Evan Duffin-Barnes and Kevin Flanagan placed third in 1:25.13.


WATER POLO

• UH defeats UOP: Chelsea Garner-Prohs scored three goals to lead the University of Hawai'i women's team to a 6-4 victory over Pacific yesterday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

It was the home opener for the eighth-ranked Rainbow Wahine, who improved to 4-8 overall and 2-2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UOP is 5-10 and 0-4.

After the Tigers closed to 4-3 in the fourth period, Garner-Prohs and Kristy Bagnell scored consecutive goals to move the Rainbow Wahine out of reach.
