3-day revival begins Friday

The Windward Episcopal churches will hold their second annual revival beginning Friday with a 7 p.m. service at Calvary Episcopal Church, 45-425 Aumoku St., Kane'ohe.

The three-day event continues with a 7 p.m. service next Saturday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 93 N. Kainalu Drive in Kailua, and ends the following day with a 9 a.m. service at Windward Community College's Paliku Theatre, 45-720 Kea'ahala Road.

Nursery and children's programs will be available at each service.

The guest speaker will be the Rev. John A. M. Guernsey, former chairman of the board of both the Episcopal Renewal Ministries and Rock the World Youth Mission Alliance, and chairman of SOMA-USA (Sharing of Ministries Abroad).

Peace vigils scheduled

The Church & Society Commission of the Harris Methodist Church is planning a series of peace vigils.

Besides the peace vigil planned for 7 p.m. tomorrow (for details, see Calendar), the commission will hold a vigil at 4 p.m. Thursday afternoons at the corner of Vineyard Boulevard and Nu'uanu Avenue "until a way for peace is found, or, if there's war, until the war is ended," said Ken Akinaka, a member of the commission. Purim events planned

During the Purim holiday, Jews recount the story of how Esther defeated the evil Haman, who wanted to kill the Jews of Persia.

Hawai'i's Jewish community will mark the day with these events:

  • At 7 p.m. Monday, Temple Emanu-El, the reformed synagogue, will perform a play written by temple member Ken Aronowitz. The cast includes other temple members. The play will be performed in the temple sanctuary. Information: 595-7521.
  • At 7 p.m. Monday, Chabad of Hawaii, the orthodox group, will host a Purim Banquet & Masquerade Contest on the sixth floor of Sunset Towers, 419 Atkinson Drive, across from Ala Moana. There will be a buffet with homemade hamantaschen (cookies), Jewish music and dancing, appearances by Megillah Gorilla, a multimedia presentation of the story of Purim and a masquerade contest; $18 ($10 for children, discounts for families).
