UH diver gets berth to nationals

For the second time in his career, University of Hawai'i's Mike Gowdy qualified for the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Gowdy, a junior from London, Ontario, Canada, qualified for nationals on Friday when he placed eighth in the 1-meter and third in the 3-meter. He finished sixth overall with a score of 417.65. Gowdy also qualified for the national meet as a freshman.

Gowdy's teammate, sophomore Jonathan Coyle, finished ninth with a 362.45. There were 11 competitors in the final event.

On the women's side, UH sophomore Maggie Roberts took eighth out of 14 divers by scoring 355.90 on the platform.

This year's championships will be March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.



SOFTBALL

• Rainbow Wahine rained out: Due to heavy rains the remaining 2003 Kia Klassic Softball Tournament was canceled yesterday at Fullerton, Calif.

However, the Pool play was completed on Friday. The team placings will be determined at a later date.

The Rainbow Wahine went 1-3 in their four games, losing to No. 9 Cal State Fullerton 5-3, No. 5 Washington 5-2, and Fresno state 3-1. Their only win came against No. 4 Texas 5-3.

UH will play in the Hawai'i Invitational which starts Thursday.



QUARTERBACK CLUB

• Three to speak: Speaking at the tomorrow's Quarterback Club will be Gary Dickman, the general manager of Players Sports Bar and radio sports talk show host, Don Robbs, UH baseball broadcaster and Dave Reardon, sports columnist for the Star-Bulletin.

The luncheon begins 11:30 a.m. followed shortly by the meeting at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant. Lunch is $7.50 for Club members and $8 for non-members.
