Kalia Road to be closed off

A section of Kalia Road near the Hilton Hawaiian Village will be closed March 26 to allow helicopters to lift equipment to the roof of the hotel's Kalia Tower.

The work is part of the hotel's plan to prevent the growth of mold in the tower. Hilton is spending about $35 million to rid the Kalia Tower of the mold that forced the hotel to close all 453 rooms at its newest Waikiki tower last July.

On March 26, Kalia Road between Ala Moana Boulevard and Rainbow Drive will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. If the work is not completed on that day, Kalia Road may be closed on March 27.

Helicopters also will be used on other days to lift equipment to the top of the Tapa Tower for a project to upgrade its cooling system, but Kalia Road will not be used as a staging area and will remain open. Flights will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are scheduled for March 28; April 10, 19, 21 and 22; May 8, 9, 22, 23 and 27; June 13 and 16; and July 2.

Renovation project OK'd

The latest phase of a renovation project at Turtle Bay Resort can move forward now that the city has found that the work would have no significant effect on the environment.

Kuilima Resort Co. has been renovating the hotel outside Kahuku since 2001, and this phase will include improvements to the main hotel building's ballroom, meeting rooms, office space, promenades, maintenance shop, entries, lobby and lounge, according to The Environmental Notices.

The resort also wants to develop outdoor dining areas, add structures to the Ocean Villas, and renovate and enlarge the existing Villas structures. Construction could begin this summer.
