Iolani's Sun wins three medals at swim meet

Advertiser Staff

Iolani Swim Club's Hongzhe Sun won two gold medals and a silver and qualified for USA Swimming's Spring National Championships in three events Saturday and yesterday at the Western Regional Northwest section meet at Federal Way, Wash.

Just two weeks after a record-setting effort in the Hawai'i high school championships, Sun beat out hundreds of entries from 10 Western states, excluding California, to win the short-course 100-yard backstroke and 200 individual medley. He finished second in the 100 butterfly.

All three of his best weekend times — 49.63 seconds in the 100 backstroke final, 48.91 in his qualifying heat for the 100 butterfly and 1:49.68 in his 200 individual medley heat — qualified for the short-course senior national championship meet in Indianapolis, April 1-5. The butterfly time is the fastest Sun has ever swum the event.

Chelsea Nagata of Maui Swim Club qualified for the Spring Nationals in the 100 butterfly Saturday with her 10th-place time of 55.99, which included a 26.08 first lap. Nagata won a silver medal for her second place in the 50 freestyle yesterday in 23.57.

Earlier in the meet, Sun took second place in the 200 freestyle in his lifetime best, but non-qualifying, time of 1:39.33.

His teammate, Mark Eckert Jr., qualified for nationals Wednesday and Thursday in the 200 backstroke and 400 individual medley. During the weekend, Eckert finished fourth, behind Sun, in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley, both in non-qualifying times.
