Tautofi too tough to stop

By Wes Nakama

Kaimuki's Daniel Tautofi used his 230 pounds to power inside, but Coach of the Year John Chung of Roosevelt said, "He really improved his outside shooting ... that's what made him too hard" to defend.

No basketball player in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Eastern Division combined inside scoring, outside shooting, rebounding and ball-handling like Kaimuki's Daniel Tautofi.

That is mainly why Tautofi was named East Player of the Year in a vote of division coaches.

Tautofi, a 6-foot-2, 230-pound senior forward, averaged 12.9 points per game and helped the Bulldogs go 9-1 in the regular season and tie for the East championship.

"He really improved his outside shooting," Roosevelt coach John Chung said. "To me, that's what made him too hard to stop."

Tautofi is joined on the East all-star first team by junior teammate Jimmy Miyasaka, Roosevelt seniors Bryson Borges and Anthony Holyfield, and Kalaheo junior Sam Wilhoite.

Miyasaka averaged 13.5 ppg, combining 3-point shooting with deft inside moves.

Borges (14.2 ppg) and Holyfield (16.4 ppg) helped Roosevelt (9-1) win a share of the East crown.

Wilhoite (16.4 ppg) led a young Mustangs team into the playoffs.

Chung was named Coach of the Year after guiding the undersized Rough Riders to four overtime wins.
