Scout in D.C. to accept award
Punahou junior Susan Hirai is in Washington, D.C., to accept a Girl Scout Gold Award/Young Woman of Distinction for 2001.
Hirai, 16, is one of 10 scouts across the country whose community service projects were selected from 3,500 entries for the award. Each scout will receive a $1,000 college scholarship.
To earn the Gold Award, a Girl Scout must create a community service project that meets an expressed need in the community. The top 10 are named young women of distinction.
Hirai's work, "Kids Who Care," was an 11-project, community-service curriculum for 30 children 2 to 6 years old. Projects included growing a vegetable garden and donating the produce to the River of Life Mission, making cookies to give to police and fire departments, and making lei to welcome new students.
Sheraton a 'Lifelong Giver'
The Sheraton Waikiki was presented the Waikiki Community Center's Makana Ola Loa (Lifelong Giver) award during an event this month celebrating the community center's 25th anniversary.
The Sheraton has hotel executives on the center's board of directors, supports volunteer programs, helps docents with historical tours and supports the annual Ala Wai Challenge canoe-race fund-raiser for the center.
Help sought for Makiki project
Volunteers are needed to help the Makiki Watershed Awareness Initiative build trails and care for native Hawaiian plants in Makiki Valley.
The project is being coordinated by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry and Wildlife. Work will include preparing trail edges for gravel placement and moving branch and wood piles to hidden sites.
Work is from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the first Saturday and third Sunday of each month.
The department will supply drinking water, gloves, tools, insect repellent and juice to volunteers, who should bring their own bag lunch and wear long-sleeved shirt, pants and boots.
