Kamehameha rolls past Iolani in ILH basketball

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

It's still early in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu girls basketball season, so Kamehameha coach Clay Cockett decided to try an experiment last night against Iolani.

The defending state champions played the first quarter in a 1-2-2 zone, which produced mixed results and a two-point deficit.

Once Cockett switched to a man-to-man defense to begin the second quarter, the Warriors turned the game into a rout, rolling over the Raiders, 56-29, at Kekuhaupi'i Gym.

Kamehameha forced 19 turnovers — 10 in the third quarter.

"We're a man, full-court pressure defensive team," Cockett said. "We cannot go through a full season doing that so I wanted to try something different tonight."

Kamehameha (3-0) outscored Iolani (2-1) 46-17 over the final three quarters, holding the Raiders to just six field goals.

The Warriors put the game away with a 12-0 run to open the second half, taking a 33-18 lead with 3:08 left in the third.

"They're very aggressive on offense and defense," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said. "They just keep coming at you."

Megan Ching led Kamehameha with 14 points and Mounia Nihipali added 11.

"Megan Ching is an awesome player," teammate India Soo said. "She leads our team well and she's going to do good this year."

The Warriors got their transition game going by forcing turnovers and dominating the boards.

"I want to push the ball up the floor, but I really don't expect a lot of transition points," Cockett said.

Kamehameha made 13 of 29 shots in the second half, while Iolani was 4 of 18.

"We weren't playing so good in the beginning, but we came out in the second half and played our game," Soo said. "Our defense really stepped it up."

Despite the lopsided victory, Cockett wasn't really pleased with his team.

"We've got a long ways to go, we're undisciplined right now," he said.

Freshman Hennasea Tokumura led Iolani with nine points on three 3-pointers.
