SOFTBALL

• BYUH wins one, loses one: Echo Hatch pitched a five-hitter and fellow freshman Shea Seever batted 2-for-3, including an RBI single in the fifth inning, as Brigham Young-Hawai'i beat Western New Mexico, 1-0, in a Pacific West Conference softball game at the BYUH field in La'ie.

Tiffany Mondhink pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Western New Mexico (25-2, 5-1 PacWest) beat BYUH (15-15, 7-7) in the second game of the doubleheader.

Hatch, who is from New Mexico, allowed two singles and her only walk of the game in the first inning to load the bases with two outs. But Hatch got Bethany Harris to ground out to second to end the threat.

BYUH's Lisa Hansen pitched a six-hitter in the second game, but errors in the first, fourth and fifth innings led to three unearned runs.

The teams play another doubleheader today at BYUH, starting at 2 p.m.

• UHH overpowers Chaminade: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo swept a pair of non-conference games against Chaminade, 6-1 and 8-0, yesterday at Palolo field.

Leinani Hashida hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Wendy Layton added another two-run shot in the seventh of the first game for the Vulcans.

In the second game, Natalie Fujimoto also hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning, and Tara Martinez and Sarah Steele combined for a three-hitter.

Claresa Asuncion batted 6-for-8, Hashida went 4-for-8 and Leo Sing Chow 4-for-7 in the doubleheader.
