The driver whose car slammed into a date palm at more than 90 mph in the crash that killed him and four passengers Tuesday in Hale'iwa was legally drunk, according to the city medical examiner's office.
The driver, identified by friends and relatives as Shannon Alika Waiwaiole, 22, had a blood-alcohol content of 0.142 percent, the office said. Hawai'i legal limit is 0.08.
Shannon Alika Waiwaiole had a blood-alcohol content of 0.142 percent.
The others killed in the crash were Patrick Askew-Jackson, 21; Kaimana Askew-Jackson, 13; Jose Delizo Jr., 17; and Rex Dicion, 31.
The medical examiner's alcohol blood test results verified police suspicions that alcohol was a contributing factor to the crash on the mauka side of Kamehameha Highway near Kawailoa Drive.
The absence of significant skid marks on the roadway indicates impact with the tree occurred less than a second after the car veered from the makai lane of Kamehameha Highway. Lt. Bennett Martin of the Police Department's vehicular homicide section estimated the reaction time to be less than one-tenth of a second.
Waiwaiole and Delizo were thrown from the car upon impact. The three others had to be extricated by firefighters. All were pronounced dead at 2:05 a.m., 33 minutes after the crash was reported to police.
