Baseball bats used in assaults

Baseball bats were used as weapons in unrelated robberies today in Waikiki and Kalihi.

Two men from Japan, ages 25 and 24, were robbed of their rental car and luggage at about 1:30 a.m. at the Honolulu Zoo parking lot. One of the two robbers, who fled in the rental car, used a baseball bat to break into the vehicle.

In the second robbery, four men stole beer, cigarettes and a pair of slippers from the 7-Eleven store at 1900 Dillingham Blvd. at 2 a.m. One of the men was armed with a baseball bat, which he used to shatter the beer refrigerator case and to threaten two clerks. The four men are still at large.

Boy suspected of setting fire

Police yesterday arrested a second boy in connection with a fire that destroyed an Aliamanu Intermediate School portable classroom last November.

The 14-year-old Salt Lake boy was arrested following an investigation of the Nov. 23 fire that caused $90,000 in damage. On March 4, a 13-year-old boy was arrested in connection with the case. Both boys face charges of first- and third-degree criminal property damage.

Fire and police arson investigators determined that the fire was deliberately set. Investigators also found evidence that someone attempted to set fires outside two other portable classrooms, but those fires extinguished themselves, police said.

Peace Garden rededication set

The Peace Garden, a swath of land at the base of Diamond Head reclaimed in 1999 in the name of peace and sustainability, will be rededicated tomorrow in ceremonies marking the World Congress of Youth — Morocco.

In ceremonies beginning at 10:15 a.m. across from Kapi'olani Community College and the Red Cross, the renewed garden — a donation of Rotary Clubs District 5000 — will be blessed, two trees planted and benches commemorating the Millennium Young People's Congress held in Hawai'i in 1999 and the upcoming event in Morocco will be installed.

Keynote speaker will be Mike Fisch, president and publisher of The Honolulu Advertiser and a member of the District 5000 Rotary.

The youth congress in Morocco will be held in August, and 21 youths from Hawai'i have committed to attending and to work for the betterment of the world and Hawai'i.
