Familiar name tops in pool
The legendary Kahanamoku name is back in Hawai'i swimming.
Sara Kahanamoku, the great-great niece of Hawai'i's most famous swimmer and Olympic Games champion, made her competitive debut this month in the Sparky Kawamoto age-group meet in Hilo.
Kahanamoku, age 8 years and 3 months, won three events in the 8-and-under division for novice swimmers.
She has been training for three months at the Waialua Rec Center Pool on O'ahu.
Like her great-great grand uncle, Sarah proved she can pull out the close ones, winning the 50-yard freestyle by a touch-out in 1/100th of a second, and she can dominate, winning the 25 freestyle by more than two seconds. She also won the 25 backstroke.
Coaches had noticed her swimming for fun at the Rec Center pool last year and invited her to join the Waialua Swim Team.
"She can't get enough; her face was just glowing after she won in Hilo," said her mother, Marta Segura of Hale'iwa.
Electric vehicle race set
The Hawaiian Electric Electron Marathon a 60- minute race of self-built electric vehicles will be Saturday at Ford Island.
Thirty high school teams from across the state will participate in the race that begins at 10 a.m.
The students design, engineer and build their vehicles starting from identical kits of basic parts provided by HECO, Hawai'i Electric Light Co., and Maui Electric Co.
The event is free and open to the public.
