Tanoue honored in air rifle, small bore

Ryan Tanoue, a sophomore at the University of Nevada, Reno, was named an All-America shooter in both air rifle and small bore competition, the NCAA Rifle Committee announced yesterday.

Tanoue of Honolulu, the 2002 NCAA Air Rifle Individual Champion, finished fifth in air rifle at this year's national championships with a score of 390. He was ninth in small bore, scoring 1185.

A three-time All-America honoree, Tanoue helped Nevada earn their highest national finish last week at the NCAA Championships in West Point, N.Y. with a fourth-place award. The top four teams in all NCAA Championships receive a team trophy.

BOXING

Viloria fight tickets go on sale: Tickets for the April 15th Brian Viloria-Valentin Leon fight at the Sheraton Waikiki go on sale tomorrow through Ticketmaster and the Blaisdell Center Box Office.

Tickets are priced at $75, $50 and $25.

GYMNASTICS

Region championships at Blaisdell: Hawai'i will play host to the 2003 Region II Gymnastics Championships April 3-6 at Blaisdell Arena.

Gymnasts from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington and Hawai'i will compete in the region, which was last held here in 1994.

The competition will feature advanced level (7-10) gymnasts from ages 8 to 18. Level 10 is the most advanced.

The Regional will determine the gymnasts who will represent Region II in the Junior Olympic National Championships in May.

Tickets are $5 per day ($3 presale) for youth 5-17 and $10 ($5 presale) for adults. Children 4 and under are free.

UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I

New booster club director: Vince Baldemor has been hired as the executive director of 'Ahahui Koa Anuenue, the University of Hawai'i Athletic Department's primary booster club, UH athletics director Herman Frazier announced Wednesday.

Baldemor was born in Philadelphia, and raised in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated with a degree in marketing and a minor in communications from De Paul University in 1992. He earned an MBA specializing in management and marketing for the University of Notre Dame in 1995.

WRESTLING

Lee advances: Second-seeded Travis Lee won two matches yesterday to advance to today's 125-pound quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I men's championships in Kansas City.

Reaching the quarterfinals assured Lee of All-American status for the second straight year.

Lee, a 2001 Saint Louis School graduate from Liliha, whipped Rich Caisse of Appalachian State 6-0 and pinned Bobby Stinson of Rider in 2 minutes, 50 seconds to improve his season record to 31-0.

Meanwhile, unseeded 125-pounder Grant Nakamura (2001 Baldwin graduate) of Iowa State lost his second-round match in the championship bracket and will meet Heath McKim of Air Force today in an elimination bout.

Nakamura defeated Elfren Ceballos (Cal-State Bakersfield), 9-5 in the first round but lost in a major decision to Michigan's A.J. Grant 9-1.
