Easter Seals gets $10,000

The Verizon Foundation has given a $10,000 grant to Easter Seals Hawai'i. The money will go toward helping children with disabilities and/or special needs in the Easter Seals Hawa'i After-School Program to improve their arts education. Education in the arts has been noted to improve children's literacy, self-confidence, focus and social skills.


$25,000 given for computers

St. Andrew's Priory School has received a $25,000 grant from the Atherton Family Foundation to expand the school's "Teaching and Learning with Laptops" program. The grant will help buy 20 Apple iBook computers.


School awarded $33,000

Lana'i High and Elementary School has received a $33,000 grant from the Lana'i Community Benefit Fund of the Hawai'i Community Foundation to support literacy efforts. The money will benefit the school's literacy development venture based on the California Early Literacy Learning program.


Family group gets donation

Parents and Children Together has received a grant of $15,000 from the Bank of Hawaii Charitable Foundation to support its Economic Development Center. PACT also received a $5,000 donation from the Law Offices of Bayes Deaver Lung Rose Baba. PACT, a private non-profit family service agency, is celebrating 35 years of community service.


HMSA gives $25,000

The Executive Office on Aging's Kokua Mau program has received $25,000 from the HMSA Foundation for their efforts to improve end-of-life care. The grant will be used to support ongoing and new programs to provide both professionals and the public information about advance-care planning, pain management and resources in the community.


Group matches money raised

The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation recently gave $400,000 to Friends of Hawaii Charities, matching money raised by Friends of Hawaii Charities through the Sony Open in Hawaii 2003 PGA Tour tournament. The $800,000 will be distributed to charities for service projects and equipment that will benefit Hawai'i women, children and people in need. The two organizations have distributed more than $2.6 million to Hawai'i charities in the last four years.


Goodwill given $2,500 grant

The Honolulu Advertiser and the Gannett Foundation recently awarded Goodwill Industries of Hawaii $2,500 for its training in demand occupations programs. Goodwill offers job training, testing/certification and placement assistance for computer technician, certified nursing assistant and para-professional human service jobs.


Printmakers raise $31,310

Honolulu Printmakers has received a total of $31,310 from various foundations to support its historical catalogue celebrating 75 years. The state Foundation on Culture and the Arts gave $11,810; McInerny Foundation gave $10,000; Atherton Family Foundation gave $5,000; John Chin Young Foundation gave $2,000; Jean Charlot Foundation gave $1,000; Hon Chew Hee Estate gave $500; Smith Street Gallery gave $500; and the Kate and John Kelly Art Foundation gave $500.


Help group gets $75,000

Assistance League of Hawaii has received a $15,000 grant from the G.N. Wilcox Foundation, a $10,000 grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation and a $50,000 grant over two years from the McInerny Foundation to renovate its new Community Service Center property. Assistance League is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping the community through philanthropic programs.


Japan donates $361,000

The Japanese government has given $361,000 to Hawai'i's Pacific International Center for High Technology Research. The center will use the money for solar home systems for Pacific island areas, technical training programs and the development of renewable energy technologies in Hawai'i and the Pacific islands.
