Wisconsin to play for softball title

Wisconsin beat No. 16 Ohio State, 3-1, last night to move into the championship game of the Hawai'i Invitational Softball Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Badgers (3-2 in the tournament) will play the winner of today's 11 a.m. game between Pacific (3-1) and Tokyo Women's College (2-3) for the championship at 1 p.m. Hawai'i (2-3) plays Ohio State (2-3) in today's first game at 9 a.m.

Andrea Kirchberg tossed a three-hitter and Boo Gillette hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to lead Wisconsin over Big Ten rival Ohio State.

In other games yesterday, Tokyo Women's College defeated Pacific, 11-0, in five innings; Pacific came back to beat Wisconsin, 2-1; Ohio State beat Hawai'i, 4-0; and Tokyo Women's College edged Hawai'i, 3-2.

Katie Chain tossed a seven-hitter and Annie Dedic drove in two runs, leading Ohio State over the Rainbow Wahine.

Chain (6-4) struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter. Melissa Coogan (13-6) gave up four runs on nine hits for UH.

Sayaka Fujikawa hit a two-run homer and Kanako Mizukami spaced four hits as Tokyo Women's College beat UH.

Trisha Ramos rallied UH with a two-run homer in the top of the seventh to make it 3-2. Shannon Tabion allowed three runs on six hits for UH.



COLLEGE GOLF

• Rainbow Wahine 8th: The Rainbow Wahine golf team is in eighth place out of 12 teams after two rounds of the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., yesterday.

Hawai'i shot 617. Kansas State leads with a 589, followed by Iowa State (592) and International Pacific College (597).

Alana Condon of Nevada and Louise Kenney of Iowa State, share the individual lead at 146.

UH's Brooke Jackson is tied for 11th with a 5-over 149.



COLLEGE SWIMMING

• UH pair fall short: University of Hawai'i swimmers Yan Chen and YingJuan Zhen did not advance into the finals of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships at Auburn University yesterday.

Chen's event was the 200 butterfly, but her time of 2:02.82 was three seconds longer than the qualifying time of 1:59.82. She placed 38th out of 40 swimmers in the event.

Zhen swam the 200 backstroke and finished 39th out of 47 swimmers. Her time of 2:01.88 was long of the qualifying time of 1:59.41.
