Kalihi is site of two shootings

One man was wounded and six others escaped injury Saturday morning in two separate shotgun shootings in Kalihi that occurred 20 minutes apart. The incidents are being investigated as attempted murders, and police have not ruled out the possibility they may be connected.

The first shooting involved five men and a juvenile boy who were in two cars parked on Kaumuali'i Street near Kalihi Kai Elementary School at 2 a.m.

Police said the six were watching a large group gathered on the street, possibly fighting, when the crowd began moving toward their cars. A man fired a shotgun at one of the cars as the driver made a right turn onto Kalihi Street while leaving the area.

At 2:20 a.m., a 21-year-old man was shot at the corner of Kalani Street and Waiakamilo Road. The man was walking from a bar to his car parked nearby when he was shot in the leg by an unknown gunman. He was treated at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children and later released, police said.

A shotgun was used in the second shooting, police said.

No arrests have been made.

BMW stolen at gunpoint

A woman was robbed of a BMW at gunpoint Friday night in the parking lot of an apartment building on Clark Street.

Police said the woman, 58, was waiting in the car for a friend at 9:45 p.m. when a man with a gun confronted her from the driver's-side door. The man demanded money and hit her on the head with the gun when she refused. The man ordered her out of the car and drove off.

Power knocked out in Hau'ula

Two transmission lines were damaged today when a car struck a utility pole in Hau'ula.

The downed lines caused a power outage affecting 120 customers, who were still without power six hours after the 3:42 a.m. crash was reported, said Hawaiian Electric Co. spokesman Bruce Benson.

No one was seriously injured in the crash in the 53-100 block of Kamehameha Highway. One lane of the highway was closed because of repairs to the pole.
