While it might seem like the end of the world when you're unemployed, it's not. Focusing on a few personal truths and job-hunting strategies will help you find your way through this time.
- Share what happened and how you're feeling with friends and family. People who care about you will be a godsend.
- Give yourself a break. Feel lousy, hit a punching bag, sleep late one morning. After a few days, its time to begin your new life.
- Know that you do have control over your life and your destiny, but it's not going to happen sitting at home in your pajamas. Develop a plan of attack.
- Know what you know. Just because you've been laid off doesn't mean that you've lost your brains, your skills or your personality.
- Remember, there is no one right way to look for a job, write a résumé or cover letter, or do an interview. Do your research, then use the job-hunting tactics you feel comfortable with. Representing yourself as something you're not will make you anxious, and that will be evident to an employer.
- Spread the word to everyone you know that you're looking for work, and be ready to give a quick rundown of your skills. Remember, most new jobs are gained through networking.
