Pacific softball team wins UH tourney

Jennifer Dacre pitched a one-hitter as Pacific defeated Wisconsin, 1-0, in 10 innings yesterday to win the Hawai'i Invitational at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Kristen Allen's sacrifice fly in the top of the 10th scored pinch runner Krystale Peterson with the game's only run.

Dacre struck out five and walked seven. Losing pitcher Andrea Kirchberg allowed six hits, striking out 12 and walking six.

Pacific beat Tokyo Women's College, 7-1, in the semifinal earlier in the day to reach the final.

In consolation play, Hawai'i amassed 12 hits, including home runs by Stacey Porter and Kate Judd, to beat Ohio State, 10-4. Melissa Coogan pitched a six-hitter for the Rainbows (17-12).

Porter was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and Kirchberg was chosen Most Outstanding Pitcher.


WATER POLO

• Brooks saves win: Goalkeeper Brandon Brooks, a 1999 Punahou graduate, made 10 saves yesterday as the United States men defeated Slovenia, 10-3, to win the French International Tournament at Jean Bouin Indoor Pool in Nice, France.

It was Team USA's first tournament of the year.

• UH women fall to Canada: The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team lost to Canada, 5-8, Saturday to finish fifth overall in the Aloha Classic Invitational at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

USC beat the Australian Junior Women's team, 7-2, in the championship to finish with a 3-0 record. California was third, followed by Canada, Hawai'i and New Zealand.


BASEBALL

• UH-Hilo splits: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo split a doubleheader with Western Illinois yesterday, winning the first game, 4-3, before dropping the second, 10-7, at Simmons field in Kailua, Kona.

Daniel Lockett earned the victory in the opener, working 7 2/3 innings while spacing 10 hits. He struck out four and walked one.

Tom Henderson's sacrifice fly in the seventh inning scored Kaliko Oligo to give Hilo a 4-1 lead.

In the second game, Western Illinois scored seven runs on four hits and one Hilo error to take a 7-0 lead in the second inning.

• McCully wins AJA title: Ryan Yamamoto pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts as McCully beat Sheridan, 9-2, yesterday in the O'ahu AJA League championship game at Ala Wai field.

Sean Yamashita went 3-for-5 and Lenn Uyeda 2-for-3 with two RBIs for McCully, which will represent O'ahu in the Hawai'i State AJA Tournament to be held in Hilo, April 5-6.


SOFTBALL

• UH-Hilo sweeps: The University of Hawai'i-Hilo swept a non-conference doubleheader from Hawai'i Pacific yesterday — winning 4-1 and 5-4 at the UHH softball field.

In the first game, Leo Sing Chow and Kristine Kahoalii teamed on a four-hitter with Sing Chow working the first four innings. Kahoalii finished with three hitless innings. Each had three strikeouts.

Tara Martinez spaced seven hits in the second game and worked out of trouble in the seventh, leaving the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base.


GOLF

• UH women finish ninth: The University of Hawai'i women's golf team shot a three-round score of 64-over-par 928 to finish ninth out of 12 teams yesterday at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz.

International Pacific College won with a 26-over 890. Iowa State finished second at 892, followed by Kansas State at 894.

Christine Boucher of Kansas State won individual honors with a 1-over 217.

Brooke Jackson (228, tie for 20th) and Tara Chappell (229, tie for 24th) were UH's top golfers.


MEETING

• QB Club: Today's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting takes on a University of Hawai'i football flavor with guest speakers Vince Manuwai, Lui Fuata and Dan Morrison.

Manuwai and Fuata are former UH offensive linemen who are looking toward the NFL draft, and Morrison is the team's quarterbacks coach.

Lunch at the Pagoda Hotel starts at 11:30 a.m with the program following at noon.
