Damaged lines cut power to Hau'ula

One-hundred-twenty Hawaiian Electric Co. customers in Hau'ula were without power for nearly eight hours yesterday after a car struck a utility pole on Kamehameha Highway at 3:42 a.m.

HECO spokesman Bruce Benson said power to all customers was restored at 11 a.m. No one was seriously injured in the crash and the utility pole did not have to be replaced. Work on reconnecting the downed lines took several hours.

One lane of the highway in Hau'ula was closed because of repairs to the pole.

One hurt in two Kalihi shootings

One man was wounded and six others escaped injury Saturday morning in two separate shotgun shootings in Kalihi that occurred 20 minutes apart. The incidents are being investigated as attempted murders, and police have not ruled out the possibility they may be connected.

The first shooting involved five men and a juvenile boy who were in two cars parked on Kaumuali'i Street near Kalihi Kai Elementary School at 2 a.m.

Police said the six were watching a large group gathered on the street, possibly fighting, when the crowd began moving toward their cars. A man fired a shotgun at one of the cars as the driver made a right turn onto Kalihi Street while leaving the area.

At 2:20 a.m., a 21-year-old man was shot at the corner of Kalani Street and Waiakamilo Road. The man was walking from a bar to his car parked nearby when he was shot in the leg, police said. He was treated at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children and later released, police said.

A shotgun was used in the second shooting, police said.

No arrests have been made.

Gunman steals BMW from woman

A BMW was stolen from a woman at gunpoint Friday night in the parking lot of an apartment building on Clark Street, police said.

Police said the woman, 58, was waiting in the car for a friend at 9:45 p.m. when a man with a gun confronted her from the driver's side door.

The man demanded money and hit her on the head with the gun when she refused, police said. The man ordered her out of the car and drove off. The vehicle has not been recovered, police said.
