JUST MY STYLE
He says color makes the man

By Paula Rath
Advertiser Fashion Writer

Paul Tamaoka found this outfit in Las Vegas: shirt by Nogaret, pants by Jean Colonna, shoes by Aldo. His favorite accessory is his dog, Yohji, named after designer Yohji Yamamoto.

Our latest profile in style is Paul Tamaoka, who's into beautifully tailored, classic cuts with subtle details that give them an urban edge. He's not afraid of color to add a little dash.

Age: 38.

Occupation: Hair and makeup stylist at Bottega Antoine Salon.

What I'm dying to buy right now: A Carmen Marc Valvo evening shirt from his fall 2003 collection. Fab! It's black organza, French cuffed, slightly embellished in the back.

The best bargain I ever found was: A pair of Comme des Garcons pants and Prada pants at Maxfield Blue in L.A.

I'm willing to pay more for top quality when in comes to: Great shoes or pants. I am a difficult fit when it comes to pants, so when I find them ... yeah!

I can never get enough: Cesare Paciotti shoes.

My favorite designers are: Jean Paul Gaultier, Giorgio Armani, John Bartlett, Dries van Noten, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana, Costume Nationale, Vivienne Westwood, Dirk Schonberger

My must-have staples are: Anything from Armani. When in doubt, he's always appropriate, always on the mark.

Three men who inspire my look are: Antoine Spinelli (owner of Bottega Antoine Salon), for always pushing the envelope without trying. Maxwell (the singer) for his mad style. Will Smith for effortless chic.

My biggest fashion faux pas was: About 10 years ago, I wore a kilt with Doc Martens — yikes!

Where he shops: In L.A., at Saks Men's Store, Maxfield Blue and H. Men; Gucci in Honolulu.
