In a "tough" outing, junior Sean Freas pitched 5 1/3 shaky but effective innings as host Iolani beat Saint Louis, 7-1, yesterday in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball game.

"Sean did a great job. He's had his moments in the preseason where he's been tough like today and he's been off at times, but he was tough today," Iolani coach Dean Yonamine said.
Iolani first baseman Kahiwa Letman attempts to tag Saint Louis' Johnny Gentry on a pickoff attempt in the first inning.
Freas, after allowing one run on five hits through the first four innings, settled down and retired eight of nine batters before walking Chester Wilson and being relieved by Wally Marciel in the sixth inning.
He finished with three strikeouts and two walks.
"He's kind of a slow starter, we can't figure it out," Yonamine said. "He's one of those guys where you know if he gets past the first two innings, he's usually pretty tough after that. We got into the fourth inning and we knew he would have his stuff by then."
Iolani also benefitted from a five-run fourth inning in which the Crusaders committed two throwing errors. The Raiders sent nine batters to the plate and had five hits, including a double by second baseman Kelly Teramoto.
"It helped a lot with my confidence; it helped my rhythm get better," Freas said about the five-run inning. "I was a little bit cold. My mechanics started off not too good, and I started to get in the game and my rhythm started to get better."
Iolani also scored two runs in the sixth inning on four hits, led by Kala Ka'aihue's double.
Galen Komo, Reid Saito and Kahiwa Letman each had two hits for the Raiders (5-0), who out-hit the Crusaders 12-6.
"They've been the guys carrying us the whole season so far," Yonamine said. "It's been Travis Nishioka, Kahiwa Letman, Darin Yamashita and Shawn Agustin, it's been those four guys at the bottom. If we can get the top half going like they are supposed to we are really going to be tough at that point."
Two Crusaders' lead-off batters were caught stealing, two runners were thrown out at home, and they hit into a rally-killing double play in the sixth inning.
"I think it hurt the momentum of the game, of what we were trying to do," said Saint Louis coach Nick Wong, whose team fell to 2-2-1. "We had a lot of mental errors that we are working on."
