Fresno State's Lane hits double-double

By Dennis Anderson
Advertiser Staff Writer

Sophomore Aritta Lane got 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds Monday night as Fresno State held off Oregon State, 58-57, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Women's NIT.

LANE
Lane, an all-state member of 'Aiea High's 2001 state championship team, was remarkably consistent — eight points and five rebounds in each half. In a close-all-the-way game, her baskets included a 3-pointer with a defender in her face during the second half.

"Nobody else was open, so I figured I might as well shoot it," Lane said. "I'm capable of making that shot."

Lane says her role in the Fresno State offense is to run the baseline and crash the boards. She did not start but played 29 minutes.

"The adrenaline, the emotion, the crowd (a Fresno State record 4,507) was awesome. It was just all there," Lane said.

"Every game we move on it gets bigger and bigger and means more and more," she said. "We just beat a Pac-10, now we get a Big 12 (Baylor at 3 p.m. today, HST, in Waco, Texas).

Fresno State has won 12 of its past 15 games.

SWIMMING

• U. of San Diego

In her first NCAA championships last week, freshman Ashley Swart (Kaiser '02) was the third-fastest freshman, and 11th overall, in the 400-yard individual medley. She earned honorable mention All-America.

Swart cut three seconds off her lifetime best in the preliminary race and 1.27 more seconds in the final for a time of 4 minutes, 15.01 seconds.

In her other events, she placed 32nd in the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.28 and 38th in her NCAA debut in the 200 individual medley in 2:03.18.

Swart broke University of San Diego records in six events this season.

She is not going to next week's USA Swimming Spring Nationals.

"I need a serious break from swimming," Swart said, "but NCAA was a great experience." One she hopes to repeat three more years.

• Occidental (Los Angeles)

Freshman Andrew Sutton (Punahou '01 of Wai'alae Iki) finished fifth in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 500 and 1,650 freestyle races at the Southern California conference championships.

Senior Nikki Inamine (Iolani '99 of St. Louis Heights) "was one of the most adaptable swimmers on the team, having swum every distance of both freestyle and backstroke over four years. She was a great role model for the younger swimmers who swam in her lane," coach Peggy Carl said. Inamine's grade-point average hovers around 4.0.

• Northern Colorado

Lenn Yonemura (Moloka'i) is student assistant coach.

BASEBALL

• Pacific (Oregon)

AKIMOTO
Senior right-hander Derek Akimoto ('Aiea '99) and freshman left-hander Chris Loo (Iolani '02 of Waipi'o) are helping make the Boxers contenders again.

Akimoto on Monday was named Northwest Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for his complete-game, 2-0 win over Puget Sound.

Akimoto (3-2) allowed eight hits but walked none and used his strike-out pitch effectively, stranding four runners in scoring position with his eight strikeouts.

Akimoto's earned-run average is 2.65 and opponents are batting .197 against him in six starts.

Loo (2-1) also had eight strikeouts and allowed one earned run in winning his second game. He leads Pacific in ERA at 2.35.

Junior Kyle Shimizu (Maui) is batting .347 (17 for 49), starting 14 games at third base.

There are nine players from Hawai'i on Pacific's roster. The Boxers are 13-5 overall and 5-1 in the conference.

• Brigham Young (Utah)

Senior Doug Jackson (Iolani '99 of Kailua) extended his BYU and Mountain West Conference career record yesterday with his 22nd triple and also singled in a run as BYU defeated Southern Utah, 8-3. Jackson is batting .384.

Junior third baseman Kainoa Obrey (Iolani '99 of Makiki) hit a three-run home run — his fifth this year — to extend his hitting streak to 12 games. Obrey leads BYU in RBIs with 29 and is hitting .372.

VOLLEYBALL

• N. Arizona/W. New Mexico

Former all-state player Liz Narkon (St. Francis '02 of Hawai'i Kai) says she will transfer next fall from Northern Arizona to Western New Mexico, where her former St. Francis teammate, Kim Tano of Kane'ohe, and Malia Kauhi (Kahuku '00 of Hau'ula) both started last season.

Narkon redshirted last fall while rehabilitating a torn right outer meniscus ligament. "The lifting we do is unreal," Narkon said yesterday. "I'm more explosive than I ever was, and my right knee is actually stronger than it ever was."

Narkon is trying a new sport this spring — throwing shot and hammer for Northern Arizona's track team. At Western New Mexico she hopes to play volleyball and basketball.

"It just didn't work out between the coach here and me," she said.

SISTERS

• St. Andrews Presbyterian (N.C.)

• Eastern Arizona (JC)

While St. Andrew's junior Tina Gonsalves (Sacred Hearts '00 of Kailua) was being honored as Softball Pitcher of the Week in the Carolinas-Virginia Conference, her stepsister, Heather Gonsalves (Kalaheo '01), was recording a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds for Eastern Arizona Community College's basketball team.

Tina Gonsalves struck out 10 and allowed one unearned run in 15 innings, including an eight-inning shutout of North Carolina-Pembroke.

Tina also is the clean-up hitter for St. Andrews and the team leader in batting average (.391, 27 for 69), doubles (11, including three in one game) and slugging percentage (.594).

Junior Kim Makahilahila (Kamehameha '00 of Kailua) starts at second base for St. Andrew's and is batting .302 (19 for 63). Sophomore Mari Finn (Lahainaluna '01) was the starting third baseman until she was suspended for breaking team rules.

Heather Gonsalves gave up a volleyball scholarship at Chicago State last year because she wasn't comfortable with "the totally different atmosphere" in Chicago.

After transferring to Eastern Arizona last fall, the 6-foot-1 Gonsalves was second in blocks on the volleyball team and started at post most of the basketball season.

ACADEMIC HONORS

• Redshirt freshman Paul Helfer (Iolani '01 of Wai'alae) of UC-Santa Barbara had a 3.77 grade-point average, second highest among 32 water polo players from eight teams honored as Mountain Pacific Sports Federation scholar-athletes.

• Freshman Charlene Lui (Punahou '02 of Wai'alae Iki) of Brigham Young-Provo was selected to the Mountain West Academic All-Conference soccer team. Lui's GPA was 3.61 for the fall semester.
