HPU prevails on Hatanaka's pitching

Freshman left-hander Cruz Hatanaka pitched a two-hitter as Hawai'i Pacific defeated Southern Connecticut State, 6-0, last night in the second game of a collegiate baseball doubleheader at Aloha Stadium.

In the first game, Henry Lee had four hits and four RBIs as Southern Connecticut State overcame an early 3-0 deficit to win, 9-5.

HPU's Grandon Costa and Alika Kuraoka each had two hits, with one of Kuraoka's hits a home run.

Hatanaka struck out one and did not issue a walk as he improved his record to 2-0 and HPU's record to 18-12.

Costa batted 2 for 3 and Tyler Ward homered and drove in three runs for the Sea Warriors.

TENNIS

• BYUH sweeps: Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept visiting Hawai'i Pacific in women's and men's play yesterday at La'ie.

The No. 1-ranked BYUH women beat No. 15 HPU, 7-2, for its 46th consecutive victory. The Seasiders (17-0) took five of six singles matches, led by No. 1-ranked Adrienn Hegedus' 6-0, 6-0 win over Dora Holdarova.

The No. 2-ranked BYUH men beat No. 6 HPU, 5-4, to improve its season record to 13-0. Top-ranked Jan Krejci held off No. 7-ranked Mikael Maatta, 7-6 (8), 6-4, to help BYUH win four of six singles matches.



WATER POLO

• Cal beats UH: Fifth-ranked California defeated the University of Hawai'i, 5-3, last night in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The Bears' Jodie Needles led all scorers with two.

Hawai'i's leading scorer Karin van Hoff got her 15th goal of the season. Neither team scored in the final period when two UH shots hit the crossbar.

The Rainbow Wahine (4-9, 2-3 MPSF) host fourth-ranked Long Beach State tomorrow.



SOFTBALL

• BYUH sweeps: Brigham Young-Hawai'i swept a doubleheader in Orange, Calif., yesterday — beating Elmhurst (Ill.), 9-0, and Linfield (Ore.), 8-2.

Echo Hatch pitched a two-hitter to beat Elmhurst in a game shortened to five innings. Crystal Elton had two hits and three RBIs.

Lisa Hansen spaced six hits over six innings to beat Linfield. Teresa Hurst drove in three runs.
