Rock 'n' soul at the W tonight

OM Records' monthly party at the W Hotel is back tonight with DJ Fluid and Omega, right, of the hot rhythm ensemble aFRO-mYSTIK.

OM president Chris Smith slips into his guise as DJ Fluid to rock out funky Afro-Brazilian soul mixed with electronica. Lead vocalist Omega intoxicates the crowd with her velvet voice and sultry sound. The blend makes for an enchanting mix full of seductive beats.

On their toes

"Footholds II: Young Choreographers on Stage," the annual dance student showcase by the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Department of Theatre and Dance, features new moves from some of the up and coming choreographers of the program.

Get ready for some dazzling pieces, such as a high-energy tap number by graduate student Colleen Murphy. Traci Chun, a bachelor of fine arts degree candidate, introduces a dance with contrasting movement styles and dynamics. Asian and Pacific dance forms also will be highlighted.

Shows are 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 2 p.m. April 6 at the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre. A post-show rap follows the April 4 performance. Tickets are $9 general; $7 seniors, military, faculty, staff and non-UHM students; and $3 UHM students. 956-7655.


Makaha Sons in benefit concert

Enjoy the sweet harmonies of the Makaha Sons as they go on a "People Helping People Campaign" and perform at The Friends of Maluhia Benefit Concert Saturday. The volunteer organization raises money for Maluhia Long-term Care Health Center, a nonprofit, state-owned facility for the frail elderly.

Chinky Mahoe and his Halau Hula 'O Kawaili'ula also will be featured. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show begins at 7 p.m. in the Leeward Community College Theatre.

Back to old Hawai'i

Go back in time with "Dreams of Old Hawai'i," a concert modeled after shows from the "Hawaii Calls" era.

Entertainers include Nina Keali'iwahamana, above, Mahi Beamer, Gary Aiko, Alan Akaka, Iwalani Kahalewai and Beverly Noa. Footage of "Hawaii Calls" shows will also be shown.

The show is produced by University of Hawai'i graduate students working on their master's degrees in ethnomusicology.

The time machine flies from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Sheraton Moana Surfrider's Banyan Court. Tickets for the dinner show are $50, including a Hawaiian buffet dinner with premium seating on the Banyan Veranda. Admission to the cocktail show is $25, including two cocktails and preferred seating in the courtyard. 922-3111.


Actress playwright to perform

Actress Anna Deavere Smith, featured in such TV series as "Presidio Med" and "The West Wing," is making her way here to present "Twilight: Los Angeles," a movie adaptation of a play she conceived, wrote and performed.

"Twilight" reflects on the Rodney King beating, the violence that resulted and the effect of the Los Angeles riots on America.

"After the movie screening, at 7:30, there will be a discussion with Anna Deavere Smith regarding the movie, sort of like a Q-and-A-type session," coordinator Kate Wester said.

The film will be shown at 6 p.m. Thursday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Campus Center Ballroom. Admission is free. 956-2501.


Song and dance of the Maori

Experience New Zealand for a fraction of the cost of traveling there: The Polynesian Cultural Center is hosting the Fourth annual Whakataetae Maori Song and Dance Competition in the Maori Village Saturday.

There are two categories of competition, with ages 2-13 in the junior division, and 14 and older in the senior division. The event is part of the center's yearlong celebration of its 40th anniversary.

Festivities begin at 9 a.m. and go until noon. Admission is $8 general, $6 children. Kama'aina Annual Pass holders may attend for free. Tickets to the competition include admission to the center, excluding meals, IMAX films and night show. 293-3333.


Honoring a prince

Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole will be honored this weekend with a parade with the theme of "Ke Ali'i Maka'ainana: The Citizen Prince" and a concert at the Hawai'i Theatre.

The parade begins at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Fort DeRussy and ends at Kapi'olani Park. Admission is free. 593-9650, 455-3985.

The concert will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday. "A Tribute to Prince Kuhio" features the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus, director Nola Nahulu and a cappella choir Kawaiolaonapukanileo, Kumu Hula Keola Lake and his Halau Mele, Raiatea Helm from Moloka'i, and the harmonizing trio Na Leo Pilimehana. Former Miss Universe Brook Lee will be emcee.

Tickets are $15, $20, $25, $35 and $50. The $50 tickets include a reception after the concert, with pupu and music by Ke Kani. Proceeds will go to Hawai'i Maoli, a nonprofit entity of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs. 528-0506.


Hot times with DJ Sammy

Fiesta caliente! It's going to be one hot party when DJ Sammy hits the town. The Spanish-born DJ and producer, best known for "Heaven" and "Boys of Summer," performs Saturday at Club Mist. His techno grooves and house beats pump up the crowd and get the floor moving.

There will be two rooms of trance, house and drum-n-bass from DJs such as PSI, G-Spot, IKON, Dawn, Kause, Tony Bear, Lava, Technique and Big Daddy Dave.

The all-ages party starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15 and $20. 591-3500.


At the symphony

The Blaisdell Concert Hall will host two programs this weekend:
  • Violinist Ignace Jang, right, appears in concert as part of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra's Halekulani MasterWorks Season. Popularly known as Iggy around town, the orchestra's concertmaster will perform University of Hawai'i composer and teacher Don Womack's "Violin Concerto." Also on the schedule are "The Bartered Bride" and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 6 in B minor, op. 54. "Iggy Shines — Local Style" happens at 8 tonight and 4 p.m. Sunday.
  • The Honolulu Symphony Chorus, Festival Chorus and Orchestra present Mozart's "Great Mass in C Minor" as part of the Sixth annual Hawaii International Choral Festival. Chorus director Karen Kennedy conducts, and tenor Les Ceballos performs as one of the featured soloists. Soprano Alicia Berneche, mezzo-soprano Linda Maguire and bass-baritone Burr Cochran Phillips also appear.

Included on the program are two works by Philadelphia-based composer Robert Moran. "Agnus Dei" and "Ite Missa Est" were composed by Moran to follow the performance of Mozart's "Great Mass," which was left unfinished.

The concert begins at 8 p.m. Saturday.
