THE LEFT LANE
Art can become a moving experience

Advertiser Staff and News Services

Feeling the need to work off a little tension? Head down to the "Mechanics of Motion" interactive demo from 6 to 9 p.m. April 4 at The ARTS at Marks Garage, where you can whirl a potter's wheel or hammer on copper, creating your own work of art. It's part of the premiere of a new Chinatown arts district event, "First Fridays," when area galleries will stay open late and celebrate the arts in various ways.

The critically praised "Mechanics of Motion" display by Hawaii Craftsman has been extended through April 19. It's open 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

These gift certificates open world of learning

You don't have to be a brainiac to give the gift of knowledge this summer. Just pony up for a University of Hawai'i Outreach College gift certificate.

The certificates are available in any denomination (cash, money order or credit card purchases available) and are good toward any noncredit course offering. And who wouldn't prefer a course in filmmaking, karate, Cajun guitar, feng shui gardening or Photoshop techniques over another kitschy coffee mug?

For more information, call 956-6878 or (800) 862-6628.

Island resident's documentary a winner

"Black Picket Fence," a film by Hawai'i resident Sergio Goes on the survival challenges among Brooklyn, N.Y., public housing residents, has been chosen by MTV News & Docs as one of five nominees for the documentary contest at the Full Frame Film Festival, April 10-13 in Durham, N.C.

The contest looks for works that capture the essence of what it is to be a young adult, and the festival is America's most prestigious showcase of documentaries.

"Black Picket Fence," shown last year in Hawai'i, was the winner of the Spirit Award and the award for best original score at the Brooklyn International Film Festival at the Brooklyn Museum, as well as the HBO Documentary Feature Award special jury prize at the Urbanworld Film Festival in New York.

"Black Picket Fence" also will be shown at the 6th Revelation Perth International Film Festival June 19-29 in Australia. A theatrical run is anticipated, through 7th Art Releasing, and Image Entertainment is contemplating a video and DVD release this summer.
