Bid for a spot in Ironman

Forget trying to qualify for the Ironman Triathlon World Championship in Kailua, Kona.

Starting yesterday, 20 spots are up for bid in a charity auction on eBay, the Internet auction site.

All right, it's not that easy. The minimum bid is $10,000. And bidders must have completed at least a half-marathon.

Normally, athletes vie for one of 1,500 slots at 24 qualifying races around the world. The 25th anniversary Ironman is Oct. 18.

The auction is the first phase of a two-year campaign to raise money for a new Kona Family YMCA on the Big Island. The World Triathlon Corporation said the money from the auction will go to Ironman Kona Community Foundation, which will donate the entire amount to the building of the facility. Bids are tax deductible.

The auction ends April 6.
