Waipahu boxer gains U.S. Amateur final

Waipahu's Samson Guillermo earned a 21-13 decision over Troy Wohosky of Medford, Ore., last night to advance to final of the 119-pound division at the U.S. Amateur Boxing Championships at Colorado Springs, Colo.

Guillermo will face Rafael Valenzuela of Phoenix, who advanced with a 20-10 decision over Kevin Hudgins of Pensacola, Fla.

In another semifinal bout, Dat Nguyen of Wailuku, Maui, lost a close decision to Mickey Bey Jr. of Cleveland in the 125-pound weight class.

The score was actually tied 17-17, but Bey was awarded the victory by a tiebreaker.



WATER POLO

• No. 10 UH loses: Karin van Hoff scored three goals and Kristy Bagnall two, but the 10th-ranked Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine fell to No. 8 Long Beach State, 8-5, yesterday in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Hawai'i is 4-11 overall and 2-5 in the MPSF. Long Beach State is 13-5 and 5-2.

Both teams will participate in the sixth annual Rainbow Challenge, beginning today. The eight-team tournament runs through Sunday and also features UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz and Cal Baptist, and international teams from Australia, New Zealand and Canada.



SOFTBALL

• BYUH loses two: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games in identical fashion to Concordia (Calif.), 4-2, yesterday in Irvine, Calif.

In both games the Seasiders (19-21) took a 2-0 lead into the sixth inning, only to have the Eagles score four runs in the bottom of the sixth.



MARTIAL ARTS

• Kempo scores: A team from Kempo Unlimited of Honolulu won two golds, two silvers and a bronze at the Tiger Balm International Tournament in Vancouver, Canada on March 17.

The athletes competed in their respective divisions of International Sport-Jujitsu Association (ISJA) and World Karate Council (WKC) kickboxing.

Tommy Lam (lightweight) and Damon Flood (middleweight) each won gold in Sport-Jujitsu.

Kynan Yonamine (light-heavyweight, Sport-Jujitsu) and Joseph Salas (super heavyweight, kickboxing) won silver.

George Lindemann (heavyweight) won bronze in kickboxing.



TRAMPOLINE

• Vercruyssen strikes gold: Hawai'i Academy's Nani Vercruyssen brought home a gold medal in the Level 10 double-mini trampoline in the Winter Classic International Invitational Meet Feb. 28-March 2 in Tampa, Fla.

The Winter Classic is the second-largest trampoline-tumbling meet in America, with 71 teams from 25 states and Belarus, Mexico and Canada.



BASEBALL

• HPU completes sweep: Geoffrey Say had three hits and Grandon Costa and Brandon Sato had two hits apiece to lead Hawai'i Pacific past Southern Connecticut State, 7-2, in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday night at Aloha Stadium.

HPU (20-12) won the first game, 18-2.

Say and Sato also hit triples, and Costa added a double.



BASKETBALL

• 'Aiea triumphs: Noe Colburn scored a game-high 15 points and Jamie Rosario added 10 as host Aiea trounced Waipahu, 35-20, last night in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball game.
