Moanalua teams up to beat Kaimuki, 50-37, in OIA

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

University of Hawai'i recruit Dalia Solia scored a game-high 17 points for Kaimuki High School last night despite a box-and-one defense designed to stop her.

But it takes more than one player to beat Moanalua, as the Bulldogs learned in a 50-37 road loss in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division.

The Menehunes (2-0) got a combined 30 points from Patti Hardimon, Marleen Leautu and Kepua Lee to take a 33-17 halftime lead and never looked back.

Christina Sierra also drained a 3-pointer during a 13-0 run midway through the second period to turn an 18-13 lead into a 31-13 advantage.

"We were concentrating on Patti and Kepua, but they have other people who can score, too," Kaimuki coach Mona Fa'asoa said. "It's just hard, because we had a bad mismatch with our guards being just 5(-feet)-1 and their guards 5-6, 5-7. When we played them man, they would just post up."

Solia, meanwhile, was held to one field goal and four points until a 3-pointer just before halftime.

"They played a box-and-one, and everybody else is going to do that to us until our other girls start scoring," Fa'asoa said.

The Bulldogs (1-2) got as close as 45-37 with 1:22 remaining in the game, but Hardimon sank five of seven free throws down the stretch to seal it. Hardimon, a second-team Advertiser All-State selection last year, finished with a team-high 16 points. Leautu added 13 points and Lee had 12 points.

"Marleen was working hard in the offseason, and our coaches have been telling us to pass to her more in the post," Hardimon said. "That'll help open things up for the guards, too."

Moanalua coach Roy Dias said Leautu has always shown scoring ability in practice, but recently started transferring that ability to games.

"In practice, she shoots the lights out," Dias said. "In games, she was a little hesitant. But now she's a lot more involved, and we're definitely looking for her to score. It adds another dimension for us."
