Rainbow water polo team up to Challenge

Eighth-ranked University of Hawai'i took a 3-0 first-quarter lead and held on for a 6-4 win over 10th-ranked UC-San Diego last night in the sixth annual Rainbow Challenge Invitational.

Earlier in the day, the Rainbow Wahine (6-11) defeated UC-Santa Cruz 16-2 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. They are one of four unbeaten teams going into the tournament's second day. It concludes tomorrow.

Fourth-ranked Long Beach State, Canada and Australia also won all their games yesterday.

ACADEMICS

UH athletes get WAC honors: University of Hawai'i men's basketball guards Mark Campbell and Carl English led the list of UH athletes named to the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic teams for winter sports.

English earned a 3.28 GPA in Liberal Studies. Campbell earned a 3.35 in Elementary Education.

Also selected were women's basketball players Michelle Gabriel (3.30, Elementary Education), Christen Roper (3.28, History) and Jade Abele (3.44, Pre-Education), and swimmers Stephanie Regucera (3.36, General Arts and Science) and Jillian Saldana (3.66, Global Environment Science).

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

BYUH splits doubleheader: The BYU-Hawai'i softball team defeated NCAA III No. 4 St. Thomas (Minn.), 8-6, yesterday to split a pair of games in the Sun West Classic Tournament in Orange, Calif.

The Seasiders (20-22) lost to Williams (Mass.), 7-3 in the second game, and completed their California road trip with a 4-4 mark.
