No change planned for property tax rate on Kaua'i

LIHU'E, Kaua'i Kaua'i County officials are proposing no change in real property tax rates this year, although higher property values mean many homeowners will see their tax bills increase.
A 7.6 percent increase in values is expected to bring in an additional $3.3 million in the fiscal year that starts July 1, even with tax rates kept level.
Tax rates differ with zoning and land use. Homestead properties have the lowest rates at $3.64 per $1,000 in assessed value of the structure, and $4.35 per $1,000 of assessed value of the land. Apartment, commercial and resort properties have the highest rates: $8.15 per $1,000 for the building and $8.55 for land. Standard single-family residential rates are $4.50 per thousand for building and $5.49 for land.
Taking into account a $40,000 homeowner exemption, the owner of a $150,000 house on a $100,000 lot would pay $1,044; the owner of a $200,000 house on a $150,000 lot would pay about $1,543.
A public hearing on the tax rates, as well as on the county operating and capital-improvement budgets, is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 6 in the County Council Chambers.
