Police Beat

Man arrested in Waipahu slaying

Pearl City patrol officers today arrested a man wanted for questioning in the investigation of a fatal shooting in Waipahu Saturday.

The 24-year-old man who was arrested was a passenger in a Chevrolet pickup stopped for speeding on the H-1 Freeway near the Ka'onohi Street overpass shortly before midnight.

According to witness statements, a 21-year-old was killed with a double-barrel, sawed-off shotgun at 2:20 a.m. Saturday. The medical examiner's office was still trying to confirm his identity.

Two injured in 3-vehicle crash

A woman, 23, and man, 50, injured in a 2:30 a.m. three-vehicle collision yesterday on the H-1 Freeway near the Managers Drive overpass in Waipahu were in guarded condition today at The Queen's Medical Center.

The woman was in the front seat of a west-bound 2001 Nissan Sentra that police said crossed four lanes, struck a guard rail and then careened back across the lanes into the path of a GMC pickup truck. It also struck a 2001 Toyota Corolla driven by the 50-year-old man.

The 23-year-old driver of the Nissan was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Girlfriend may be charged

Police are seeking to charge a 37-year-old Mo'ili'ili woman with attempted murder and first-degree criminal property damage for allegedly trying to run over her boyfriend Saturday night and damaging property.

The man, 54, complained of leg pain but refused medical treatment, police said.

The couple began arguing after leaving a Kewalo-area restaurant at 11:40 p.m. The woman allegedly drove at the man, hitting him twice, police said. The incident ended in the parking lot of United Fishing Agency at 117 Ahui St., where the car caused property damage.

Police awaiting autopsy results

Honolulu police are awaiting results from an autopsy today to determine whether a 60-year-old who died Saturday at The Queen's Medical Center had been beaten.

The man told hospital officials Friday his facial injuries were due to a fall, but told an acquaintance he was struck in the face Wednesday with a pipe by an unknown person near 'A'ala Park.

Maunawili loses electric power

Some 1,300 Hawaiian Electric Co. customers in the Maunawili Valley subdivision lost power today because of a broken insulator.

The 5:34 a.m. power failure affected lighting in the Pali Tunnel and street lighting at Castle Junction. HECO spokesman Fred Kobashi-kawa said power was restored to 1,000 customers by 6:30 a.m. and to 300 more customers by 10 a.m.

He said the insulator, which serves as a support for transmission lines, is located in a remote area in the valley.
