Association names leaders

The Aloha Society of Association Executives, the professional society for executives who manage trade associations and professional societies in Hawai'i, has announced the following officers and directors: Mark Beede of the Hawai'i Pacific Tennis Foundation, president; Cynthia Hayakawa of the NAIFA, vice president; Barbara Kono, secretary; Kathy Castillo, treasurer; and Alison Powers, immediate past president. New directors are: Roberta Cullen, Tim Lyons, Gail Glushenko, Cheryl Fernandez, Carl Takamura, Lowell Kalapa, Brian Lee and Edward Thompson.


UH pair named to organization

University of Hawai'i-Manoa School of Travel Industry Management Interim Dean Pauline Sheldon and professor Juanita Liu have been selected into the elite, 68-member International Academy for the Study of Tourism, an international organization created to enhance both theoretical and practical research in the field of tourism.

Liu and Sheldon will be inducted into the academy at a ceremony in Savonlinna, Finland, on July 1.


Program gives scholarships

T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood Hawai'i, a statewide program that provides scholarships to early childhood practitioners working toward an associate degree in Early Childhood Education, has named its scholarship awardees for the spring 2003 semester.

O'ahu recipients include: Stacie Meyers, Mele Silsby, Jody Hata, Elizabeth Muafono, Emmerine Maelua, Carol Konno, Janice Kiaaina, Latonya Adger, Johanna Henaghan, Kristy Burdette, Alvina Villegas, Shirena Leong, Melissa Berrien, Tina Edra, Terri Turner, Michelle Kinoshita, Desiree Gopie and Angel Auna. From Kaua'i, Kathleen Smith and Antoinette Gonsalves. From the Big Island, Jane Kurosawa, Terry Sever, Tammy Kirk and Sussanne Ventimiglia. From Maui, Wendy Pimentel and Colleen Bednarsky.


UH announces award winners

The University of Hawai'i-Manoa College of Arts and Sciences announced the recipients of the 2003 John Young Scholarship in the Arts and the Richard and Mildred Kosaki Student Assistance award.

John Young Scholarship graduate winners ($6,000 each) include Christine Berwin, Megan Evans, Jennifer Goodlander, Eun Sook Kim, Jeffrey Long, Norman Munoz, Teri Skillman-Kashyap and S. Erin Williamson. Undergraduate winners ($3,000 each) include Melissa De Sica, Kamuela Kahoano, Pualana Lemelle and Jonathan Padua.

Winners of the Kosaki Scholarship are: Hyechong "Helen" Hong, Emelihter S. Kihleng, Grace Liu, Gregg Linzenbery, Tatiana Sanfilippo, Kendra Watanabe and Eve Youngdale.


Group picks board members

OSU Hawai'i has elected the following members to its board of officers for 2003:

Gen. David A. Bramlett, U.S. Army (ret.) and adjunct faculty member in the Hawai'i Pacific University graduate program for diplomacy and military studies, has been elected president.

Vice presidents of the board are Mildred M. Courtney of Outrigger Hotels and Resorts (events and activities); Roger Morey of Hawaiian Natural Water Co. (marketing); Herman "Butch" Finley Jr., of the Aisa-Pacific Center for Security Studies (facilities); Doug Carlson of Carlson Communications (public relations), and Rear Adm. Joseph J. McCelland Jr., U.S. Coast Guard (ret.) (administration). Businesswoman Clarie Engle has been elected secretary and Garrett Grace of Central Pacific Bank, treasurer.


Mink fellowship intern named

University of Hawai'i-Manoa William Richardson School of Law student Van Luong has been named the first recipient of the Patsy Mink Legislative Fellowship and will serve as a legislative intern for U.S. Rep. Ed Case in Washington this summer.

The Hawai'i Democratic Party donated $2,500 for the fellowship, to be awarded to a student from the Richardson School of Law each year who most embodies the spirit and leadership of the late U.S. Rep. Patsy Mink.
