State agency fined $47,500

CAPTAIN COOK, Hawai'i — The state Department of Health has fined a state agency $47,500 for violations of hazardous waste rules.

The complaint against the Department of Accounting and General Services' maintenance yard on Na'apo'opo'o Road in Captain Cook was filed in response to an Aug. 21 inspection by officials from the Solid and Hazardous Waste Branch, the DOH said.

The inspectors found paint and paint thinners were stored and treated at the yard without a permit, the announcement said. The yard also was cited for alleged mismanagement of paint and paint thinner containers, failure to properly label containers and failure to make a hazardous waste determination.
