Board vote turns up surprises

 •  Neighborhood board election winners

Advertiser Staff

Results of the 2003 Neighborhood Board elections released today showed that some longtime community representatives were not returned to office.

Two board chairpersons were ousted, and some board veterans, including Mark Terry of the Kuliouou-Kalani Iki Neighborhood Board and Sheri Bentley in Wahiawa, did not win re-election, according to Ben Kama Jr., executive secretary of the Neighborhood Commission.

Meryl M. Anderson, a charter member on the North Shore board, also lost her re-election bid. And because the Wai'anae board was reduced from 25 members to 15, several longtime community representatives were not re-elected.

A total of 531 people filed for 444 seats on O'ahu's 32 neighborhood boards. Elections are held every two years, and the new members' terms run from June 1 to May 31, 2005. The board's role is advisory only and members are volunteers.

Sixty-one uncontested races this year meant only 190,000 ballots were sent to voters in mid-March. About 50,000 were returned. The fewer ballot numbers resulted in a savings of about $41,000 to the city.

The election cost about $160,000, Kama said.

Correction: Meryl M. Anderson lost her re-election bid to the North Shore Neighborhood Board. She was misidentified in a previous version of this story.
