University of Hawai'i assistant coaches Bob Nash and Kathy Carey were two of the winners for the AFLAC National Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
Nash and Carey were among the 500 collegiate assistant coaches nationwide selected by a panel of judges from Scholastic Coach and Athletic Director magazine. The winners were chosen from a field of more than 350,000 assistant coaches in all sports.
Nash recently completed his 22nd season as an assistant coach for the UH men's basketball team. He was a starter on UH's "Fabulous Five" teams of 1970-72, and has served as associate coach under Riley Wallace for the past 15 years.
Carey has been an assistant for the UH women's soccer team for nine years. This past season, the team broke 21 school records.
The selections were based on longevity, expertise, contributions to the school and community, and special achievements throughout their careers.
