Chaminade's Adams stops pursuing UHH

Glennie Adams has withdrawn her name from consideration for the vacant Hawai'i-Hilo women's volleyball coaching job and will remain at Chaminade, according to Chaminade athletic director Aaron Griess.

Adams was one of three top coaching candidates to replace Hall of Fame coach Sharon Peterson, who announced her retirement Dec. 4. Peterson coached the Vulcans for 25 years and served her final day Dec. 31.

Griess said UH-Hilo had approached Adams to ask her if she was interested in the job. Adams agreed to listen to UH-Hilo, but decided to withdraw after a change of heart, Griess said. Adams could not be reached for comment yesterday.

"As she thought about (the job) more, she decided it wasn't realistic that she would actually do it," Griess said. "She didn't want to waste anybody's time — her time or Hilo's time."

Griess said he was pleased that Adams chose to remain at Chaminade. Adams is also the school's senior women's administrator.

"I wouldn't want to lose her because she is valuable to the department," said Griess, who gave Adams permission to pursue the UH-Hilo position.

Adams played for Peterson at UH-Hilo and earned All-America honors while playing on two national championship teams. In 1990, Adams became the third Vulcan to be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame.

UH-Hilo is scheduled to interview Salt Lake Community College coach Julie Morgan today and Baldwin Wallace College (Ohio) coach Victoria Brault tomorrow.

Jim DeMello, search committee chairman and UHH assistant athletic director, earlier said that Adams, Morgan and Brault are what "the selection committee deemed as top candidates." DeMello said the new coach could be hired by the second week of this month at the earliest.

• Reyes honored: Hawai'i Pacific's Jamie Reyes earned Pacific West Conference Player of the Week honors for helping the Sea Warriors (32-20 overall, 10-8 PacWest) finish the season with a six-game winning streak.

In four wins over Chaminade, the sophomore center fielder batted 7-for-16 (.438) with two home runs, two doubles, six RBIs, five runs scored and three walks.
