Honoring Auntie Maiki Aiu

Halau Hula O Maiki's 19th annual "Kahikolu," the Founder's Day Celebration that honors hula master Maiki Aiu, takes place 11 a.m.-2 p.m. May 26 at St. Francis School. It begins with a fun run at 10 a.m. and continues with entertainment and food. Copies of the book "Hula is Life," which tells the story of Aiu and her halau and written by Rita Ariyoshi, will be available for purchase. Admission is $20 general, $15 pre-sale; or $20 to enter the fun run (you get a T-shirt, which lets you in to the festival). 955-0050.

"Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" composer Tan Dun, left, joins the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra in a pair of multimedia concerts May 9 and 11. Dun will conduct his Oscar-winning music as clips of the popular martial arts/love story film are shown. Also in the program is Dun's Concerto for Water Percussion and Orchestra, which features an instrument made of recycled cardboard and electronics. Then there's John Cage's notorious "4'33" — presented for the first time in Honolulu — composed entirely of silence. Yes, you read that right! Tickets: $15-$57.

CONCERT: May 13

It's a night of kitties and bunnies when the Wave Waikiki's infamous Pussycat Lounge hosts two Playboy models/DJs for a night of hip-hop and progressive trance. Hawai'i-born DJ Diamond has headlined with world renowned DJs Donald Glaude, Skribble and Irene, among others. Her infectious electronica grooves have been a hit at rave scenes around the world. Resident Wave DJ LisaV, aka DJ Daddy's Girl, brings in her mix of underground hip-hop for a night of hot music and moves. Cover is $10, for 21 and older.

STAGE: May 14-June 1

Analyze the world of numbers through the drama "Proof," the Pulitzer Prize-winning play that explores love and the mysteries of mathematics as a young woman copes after the death of her mathematician father. The arrival of her estranged sister and the attentions of a former student of her father's complicate matters. The discovery of a proof among the mathematician's belongings digs up questions which his daughter struggles to answer. Tickets: $25.

STAGE: May 15-24

The search for love and belonging returns with the restaging of "Road Movie," the Starving Artists Theatre production starring Mark Pinkosh, left, and written by Godfrey Hamilton, beginning May 15 at Paliku Theatre. The one-man show — including three female characterizations for Pinkosh — is an award-winning theater piece that has been translated into Italian, French and German and has played in London, Rome, Paris and Munich. Tickets are $20 general, $18 students; but if you purchase them before May 7, all tickets are $15; available at Paliku and Ticketmaster outlets.

CONCERT: May 16

The Derek Trucks band will make its first visit to Hawai'i with a tour of Maui, O'ahu, Hawai'i and Kaua'i in May as part of the 7th Annual Rhythm and Blues Mele. Just off of an East Coast tour, the band will promote its latest release, "Joyful Noise." The jazzy world-music group consists of Trucks (guitar), Kofi Burbridge (keyboards, flute and vocals), Todd Smallie (bass and vocals), and Yonrico Scott (drums, percussion and vocals). Tickets: $28 advance, $32 at the door.

CONCERT: May 17

Grammy- and Oscar-nominated Stephen Bishop makes his way to O'ahu for an evening of pop music. The clarinetist-turned-acoustic-guitar-player is known for his hits "On and On," "Save it for a Rainy Day" and "It Might Be You." His songs have been sung by artists including Phil Collins, Barbra Streisand and Eric Clapton. Also on the bill that night will be local 'ukulele wonder Jake Shimabukuro. TIckets: $20 advance, $25 at the door.

Eve Ensler's phenomenon, "The Vagina Monologues," returns to Honolulu for performances starring Kelly Hu. Based on an array of interviews with women, the show explores the humor, power, pain, wisdom, outrage, mystery and excitement of the female reproductive organ. Tickets: $20-$45.

Delight in Hawaiian sound and dance during the Hawaiian Bash, an evening celebrating local music. There will be hula dances and the music of Mark Keali'i Ho'omalu, below, Maunalua, 'Ale'a, Kahua, Kim, Justin, Na Palapalai and the Kamehameha Schools Children's Chorus. Tickets: $10-$25 pre-sale, $12-$30 at the door.

CONCERT: May 27

The hottest rapper on the airwaves right now is in the money and planning to take Hawai'i by storm. Street smart and confrontational, 50 cent brings his tell-it-like-it-is approach to music to rock this rock. His latest album, "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" includes hits like "Wanksta," "What's Up Gangsta" and "Patiently Waiting" featuring Eminem. Brooklyn native Fabolous brings his up-tempo party vibe to the bill as special guest. Tickets: $36.50 and $39.50.

DANCE: May 30-31

Consider it fate that "Destiny" has returned. After its world premiere at the Hawai'i Theatre last May, Iona Contemporary Dance Theatre brings back the powerfully moving production based on the maternal strengths of the Earth and the forces of change. The dreamlike sequences blend butoh and modern dance, with fantastic costumes and one-of-a-kind production elements. Using dance, aerial movement, video and the spoken word, "Destiny" is a treat for the eyes and journey for the soul. Tickets: $25-$45, with a $5 discount for students, seniors and military.

Splish splash with some watery wonders when The Saigon Water Puppet Theatre brings about its magical delights. The company, from Ho Chi Minh City, is considered one of Vietnam's national treasures. Using puppetry on water, the troupe uses a backdrop of traditional music to highlight the playful action and comic scenes. Colorful costumes and inspired choreography add to the artistry. Tickets: $12 general, $8 students, seniors and Friends of the East-West Center members.

Enterprising Trekkies can see some of their heroes up close and personal during the Hawaiian Sci-Fi Convention, which features George Takei, left, Wil Wheaton, Chase Masterson and others.
